My thoughts on Marathi poem
A spider resting in its web has only one job to do. Just wait and wait till one poor prey gets trapped in its web. For a spider, the web is its world. It has no interest in what mess humans are creating on earth. It doesn’t even have that capacity to capture that!
We humans are so engrossed in our daily game(our intention or not) of dominating each other on the basis of power, money and all kinds of silly standards. We are occupying the miniscule amount of space and time in this universe, but still in this process we tend to boast ourselves as the invincible species that will live forever. But we fail to recognise the unimaginable scale of forces playing in the background. We are like that spider fully content resting in our small web.
I would like to quote Carl Sagan’s reaction on the famous photograph-
‘Pale Blue dot’(attached as second image)
“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam”
We are mesmerised by beautiful pictures ranging from massive distant galaxies to stark landscapes on Saturn’s moon Europa in our backyard. But also get depressed by one thought that we will never get to visit these beautiful alien places!
We were born too late to explore the earth, but also too early to explore space!
And at this moment we realise, our planet seems to be the only place standing out distinctly in this vast cold, desolate universe blooming with life!
